ST. MARY'S TROPHY

SPIRIT OF THE CLASS

1947-1970 Saloon Class

The race is open to the following classification and categorisation of Saloon Cars:

Cars built between 1/1/1947 and 31/12/1961
Cars built between 1/1/1962 and 31/12/1965
Cars built between 1/1/1965 and 31/12/1970

A Saloon or a saloon car is a car with seats for four or more people, a fixed roof, and a boot that is separated from the rear seats. However, the Herald Coupe is also included.

Each entrant must present a minimum of two cars - one under 2 litre, the other over 2 litre.

All cars to be accurate 1/32 scale representations of a full size car.

The cars listed below are those that qualify for both TransAm Under 2 Litre status at the CSCRA Events as well as our 1960-1972 Saloons Class.

CHASSIS

In-line only. Penelope Pitlane Clubman, Amato 3D printed and PCS adjustable chassis are permitted. Tubed front axles are permitted. Ballast is permitted.

GROUND CLEARANCE

The minimum ground clearance of the chassis and body between the wheels will be determined by engine capacity.

The aim is to provide some differential between engine capacity. The engine size is based on original touring car rules. It is noted that cars like Mk-I and Mk-II Jaguars will be narrower than the American muscle cars. This is covered by allowing narrow track cars to run at at a ride height below their cc designation.

Up to 1200cc cars; ground clearance = up to 1mm
1201-1600cc cars; minimum ground clearance = 1mm
1601-2700cc cars; minimum ground clearance = 1.5mm
2701cc-plus cars; minimum ground clearance = 2mm

WHEELS

Must be representative of the real wheels and have appropriate inserts fitted.

OTHER PARTS

Front and rear wheel and tyre width

Up to 2000cc; minimum width = 5mm, maximum width = 8mm
Over 2000cc; minimum width = 7mm, maximum width = 10mm

Wheelbase

Both tyres on the axle must fit inside the arches of the body presented. In all cases where wide arches are used, proof of their use on the real 1:1 car will be required.

Motor

Any S-can up to 20k RPM at 12volts (e.g. NSR3004 Shark 20k Orange or Scaleauto SC-0008B 20k.

Gearing

The aim is to allow larger capacity cars good straight line speed, yet keep smaller capacity cars competitive:

Up to 2000cc; open ratio.
Over 2000cc; 3:1 ratio (9 tooth pinion, 27 tooth crown)

RACE FORMAT

We all want to have stress-free enjoyable racing, drink tea and get home at a reasonable time to get some sleep and dream of victories. Therefore, it isn't viable to run two heats for both the under and over 2 litre cars.

Therefore, at the beginning of the night, each entrant will provide information as to which car is proposed to run on each lane:

6 Lane track; each car runs on three lanes
5 Lane track; each car runs on two plus entrants choice for fifth

The order is up to the entrant and there could be a tactical advantage to be gained.

For example:
Entrant #1; White <2 ltr, Yellow >2 ltr, Red >2 ltr, Green <2 ltr, Blue >2 ltr, Black <2 ltr.

SCALE & DIMENSIONS

The information below is from the CSCRA Site which will inform our rules.

All cars to be accurate 1/32 scale representations of a full size car.
As most racers are very much reliant on manufactured bodies, which are not always perfect, there is no specific requirement for exact scale length and width for body shells. They are, however, expected to be reasonably to scale. If you push the boundaries too far you may be asked to run something else. A 64mm wide Lotus Cortina, for example, is not acceptable.
Wheelbase measurements must be 1/32 scale. “Wheelbase” is the distance between the centre lines of the front and rear wheels.
No car should exceed the maximum width permitted for each class. However, event organisers and Scrutineers shall have the discretion to allow body shells that exceed the maximum width by a small margin to be used provided that the chassis, wheels and tyres do not exceed the maximum permitted width for the class and that the rest of the car fully complies with the Car Standards in every other way. Cars will be measured at the widest part of the body, chassis, wheels and tyres.
When the car, in race ready condition, is placed on a flat and level section of track to be used for the event all tyres must touch the track surface and roll when the car is pushed forwards.
It is the entrant’s responsibility to prove the accuracy of any car. If there is any doubt the scrutineer may ask you to run something else.
The scrutineer’s decision is final.

GENERAL

The information below is from the CSCRA Site which will inform our rules.

All body shells must be of hard plastic, glass fibre, resin, wood, metal or similar material. Vacuum formed bodies are not permitted.
Wheel arch extensions are only permitted if they can be shown to have been fitted to the prototype during the period covered by the race meeting.
All cars must be finished in a style sympathetic to the period being represented and carry at least two racing numbers.
All cars must have clear window glass etc fitted where it appears on the prototype. Vacuum formed windows and headlight covers are permitted.
All cars must have a suitably decorated and period correct, 3 dimensional, representation of a driver consisting of at least a head, shoulders, arms, hands and the upper part of a steering wheel. Vacuum formed interiors and drivers are permitted but must be realistic.
The chassis, wheels and tyres, motor and all running gear must not be visible from above or through the cockpit opening, cabin area or engine bay unless that which can be seen represents parts of the real car. Inlet trumpets or exhaust systems for example.
The slot guide must not protrude beyond the front-most point of the car when in the straight ahead position.
