CAN-AM
SPIRIT OF THE CLASS
The Canadian-American Challenge Cup, or Can-Am, was an SCCA/CASC sports car racing series held from 1966 to 1974, and again from 1977 to 1987.
The Can-Am rules were deliberately simple and permitted unlimited engine sizes with turbocharging and supercharging, virtually unrestricted aerodynamics, and were as close as any major international racing series ever got to having an "anything goes" policy.
As long as the car had two seats, bodywork enclosing the wheels, and met basic safety standards, it was allowed to race.
Cars produced well over 1,000 horsepower with the Porsche team claiming 1,500hp for its 917/30 in qualifying trim. Wings, active aerodynamics and very light weight resulted in cars with unheard of speeds at the time. They were faster than F1 cars around some circuits!
